All machinery sold within Europe must meet Directive 2006/42/EC, otherwise known as the Machinery Directive.

Meeting The Machinery Directive With A 2 Post Lift

When you go to buy a new piece of machinery, make sure it is up to specification and safe. Doing so will help to prevent injury, accidents and in some cases death. One way to tell if the equipment you are buying is safe is to check for the CE mark. When this mark is present, it will assure you that your scissor, 4 or 2 post lift is certified and safe for use in the UK.  

This mark will show that your new scissor lift and 4 or 2 post lift meets EU safety standards. Most products will be certified that they meet the directive, by the equipment’s manufacturer, agent or supplier. However, a section in the directive states that lifts used for servicing vehicle’s, must have an EC type-examination by a notified body. This will check that the new lift either satisfies the essential Health and Safety Requirements or that the manufacturer has followed the requirements of National and International standards (BSEN1493) in their entirety.

Once the assessment has been carried out, the manufacturer, agent or supplier should prepare a Declaration of conformity and apply the CE mark to the equipment. In the declaration it should include details of the Notified Body who has undertaken the EC type-examination and the assessment method, either EN1493 or the EHSRs.
